Maybe you’ve never heard of Google My Business, but you’ve definitely seen it. Any time a business listing appears in Google Maps, or in the sidebar of Google Search, it’s because they’ve set up Google My Business. I recommend every business to set it up, but if you are a local business owner then it is a must for you.

 

More than a million searches take place on Google per hour and if your business products or services are not showing on the related search results, then you need to look up your strategy and use tools like Google My Business. This tool of Google helps you to get free space of search pages. You can add details of your business like address with maps, contacts info, provide reviews for your product or service from genuine customers, etc. The end-user of your product can reach out directly to your business place or contact you directly without any visit to your website.

 

Now, the question comes is how to add your business on Google My Business?

7-step process to add your business on Google My Business

 

Step 1: Sign in to Google My Business

  • Tip - Sign up to Google with your business email domain, as it will help to claim many businesses you may have.

 

Step 2: Enter your business name

  • Even if you’ve never created a listing before, your business may already exist in Google Search with your details ready to be checked. If the business already exists, you’ll need to claim business.

 

Step 3: Choose Business type

You serve customers / You don't serve customers at your business address:

 

  • Enter your business address.
  • Click Next, if you serve customers at your business address. 
  • If you also serve customers outside your business address, you'll have the option to list your service areas as well.
  • If you don't serve customers at your business address, at the bottom, click I deliver goods and services to my customers.
  • List your service areas, then click Next.

 

Step 4: Select a business category.

 

Step 5: Enter a phone number or website URL, then click Finish.

  • Tip- You can also create a free website based on your information. I recommend to set up website if you don't have any website for your business as it's not going to cost anything.

 

Step 6: Select a verification option.

  • To verify now, at the top, find the red banner and click Verify now.
  • To verify later, click Verify later.

 

Step 7: Download the Google My Business App

  • Everything's better when you can do it on the go. Download the app to your Apple or Android device. Keep an eye on the metrics to see how you're reaching your audience and don't forget to respond to questions.

 

7 tips for your Google My Business listing optimisation

  1. Business categories are key to reaching the right audience, review this as Google can change its categories.

  2. Business location is important, if you service a certain area, and it’s a good idea to specify the areas your business operates in. 

  3. Opening hours must be accurate, so when customers call, they don’t reach you out of hours. Make sure to add public holidays and seasonal holiday hours as well. The app will also prompt you to do this.

  4. Add photos, it brings your profile to life. Load your best photos for each service category, photos of your business vehicle, your team, and completed jobs.

  5. Send link of your listing to your customers through email signature and ask for a review. 

  6. Answer questions before they’ve been asked. Take note of the questions you’re asked most by new leads, and load them, along with the answers, to the Q&A section of your listing.

  7. Publish reviews, Google My Business is one of the many ways you can generate customer reviews. Make sure you respond to every review, good, or bad — it’ll go a long way to giving your business credibility.
